Konwersatorium:
Evolution of TV Systems and Digital Imaging

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the continuous process of TV systems evolution and practical implementation of mechanisms for digital imaging and video broadcasting. Development of DTV, i.e. digital imaging and video broadcasting systems, deals with the acquisition/capture, processing, storage and distribution/transmission of diverse forms of the information (voice/audio, image/video, graphics/text etc.). Hence, the course investigates methods for handling audio/video content in TV systems and explore the advancements in network communications for provision of diverse (interactive, converged and multimedia) TV services.

The classes/conversatory/seminar is lead in the conversational manner.

The participants are obliged to get to know some reading materials before the class meeting, and during the meeting the problems are discussed publicly. The discussion is led by one of the participants with the help of the prepared presentation.

The subset of the following topics is going to be covered at participants’ discretion:
TV regulations, standards and applications, performance objectives of digital TV, channel coding and modulation for DTV, radio-frequency systems (transmitters, transmission line, antennas) for DTV, mechanisms for digital imaging and video broadcasting (image capture operation ), colour reproduction in TV systems (SDTV, HDTV, UHDTV), television system workflow and signal path, service delivery platforms (service model, conditional access services, interactive services), interactions among content or application service providers, relations between content/application providers and access service providers, DTV network economics, strategy and planning.

Sposób obliczania oceny końcowej:

To obtain a positive grade for the module, it is necessary to prepare a presentation on a selected topic and lead a discussion on it. The number of presentations is related to the fair share of all the participants and the number of meetings (e.g., two presentations per person per semester).

The grade is found as the maximum of m and n, where m is the grade proposed by the teacher and n is the median of the grades proposed by other participants of the course. Additionally:
(1) No more than two absences at the seminar meetings are acceptable. (2) The tutor must be provided a presentation on a selected fragment at least week prior to the meeting. (3) The presentation should be prepared according to the suggestions of the tutor. Failing to meet these conditions, is related to necessity to pass a test covering the discussed topics to obtain the positive grade for the course.

Wymagania wstępne i dodatkowe:

Basic knowledge of the information theory and digital transmission (encoding, modulation) techniques as well as multimedia information processing.
